Students continue to choose rented accommodation

Investor landlords are continuing to enjoy strong demand from the UK's student population.

Despite this, 22 per cent of those planning to start university this year admit that they will continue living with parents because of financial concerns.

A report from Lloyds TSB suggests that this is not a popular arrangement, however, with 73 per cent of parents admitting that they would prefer their offspring to move out of home to gain independence.

Nonetheless, the figures show that living in rented accommodation is still a big draw for students. More than three quarters of those who will be living away from home next year say that they will do so to be close to the university campus and 72 per cent say that gaining independence is the biggest attraction.

A further 60 per cent are enthusiastic about the social aspects of living away from home and 23 per cent simply wish to escape the clutches of their parents.

While 48 per cent of students say that they will live in halls of residence during their first year at university, 44 per cent hope instead to live in a shared house.
