Property News - Worcester awaits potential housing boom

The property market in Worcester may be set for an overhaul if a government plan to build almost 10,000 new homes comes into fruition.

In addition to the new houses, the government is also hoping to build a huge relief road as well as new shops, businesses and community facilities, reports the Worcester Standard.

The West Midlands Regional Assembly reportedly chose Worcester as one of the areas most in need of growth for the benefit of its economy. Shrewsbury, Telford, Rugby and Hereford have also been picked out and the impact on the landscapes of these cities would seemingly be significant.

The Worcester Standard claims to have discovered that 11 sites have been identified for development. The land south of St Peter's would purportedly see 1,240 new homes, the area south of Martley Road would be the location for a further 1,800 and another 2,000 homes would spring up on the land north of Martley Road.

If successful, it is thought that this plan would push Worcester a little closer to Malvern, while the city's population would rise above the 100,000 mark.

Recent figures from the Royal Bank of Scotland show that homeowners in Worcester will be waiting for an average of 23 years before they have paid a mortgage off, which compares to just 13 years in nearby Wolverhampton.
