Survey shows people would prefer a garden

A garden can prove to be a key factor in persuading prospective buyers to purchase a property, according to new research.

Figures from HBOS have shown that two out of five people find it difficult to find a property with a suitable outdoor space, and 55 per cent of house hunters would go without a garage to find a property with a bit of greenery.

In addition 56 per cent of people questioned would rather have a garden than a second bathroom.

Colin Kemp, a member of the group, stated: "Buyers are increasingly attracted to homes offering the possibility for outdoor living. With today's hectic lifestyles, people are looking for an alternative place to relax in their spare time.

"Our survey shows that having a garden is a distinct advantage when selling a property. With a little maintenance, this area can prove extremely appealing to prospective buyers and can even be the determining factor in a sale."

Tips for how to make your garden as a appealing to buyers as possible include removing any domestic rubbish from the space, and allowing trees and shrubs to grow to create an element of privacy.
