Property News - Public urged to help over housing supply shortage

The public must become more understanding over the need for housing development, the Home Builders Federation has claimed

The public must become more understanding over the need for housing development, the Home Builders Federation has claimed.

A survey published by the Financial Times this week suggests that 83 per cent of people in Britain would not support further property development in their home area.

However, the Royal Institution of Chartered surveyors reported that housing supply is at its lowest level for seven years.

Without new housing developments, demand for existing homes is likely to increase, driving prices up.

John Slaughter, director of external affairs for the Home Builders Federation, said: "From our perspective, we certainly face a national housing crisis."

"We need to build more homes consistently to take the pressure off affordability. And that does require taking the public with us in terms of the benefits in providing them housing."

Mr Slaughter called for a clearer communication process between the public and the housing industry in order to promote housing developments across the UK.
