Property News - Chancellor wants 'five eco towns'

In order to meet demand for homes and a drive towards increased house building, chancellor Gordon Brown has said that he wants to create five "eco" towns.

In order to meet demand for homes and a drive towards increased house building, chancellor Gordon Brown has said that he wants to create five "eco" towns.

As part of his leadership campaign, Mr Brown has made a pledge that 100,000 homes will be carbon neutral and be powered by energy from sustainable sources.

He suggested that the new towns could offer properties for young couples who are trying to get on the housing ladder and find buying a first home difficult.

So far, a former military site in Cambridgeshire has been targeted as an area for 10,000 of these new homes.

A number of other past industrial sites will be transformed if the proposals run successfully for the potential future prime minister.

"You have got to combine the building of housing for ownership with the building of houses for rent in a far more mobile and fluid society," he said.

Labour's leadership elections are due to take place before Tony Blair steps down on 27th June and the winner will be announced on 24th June.
