Commuter towns just outside London are benefiting from unaffordable house prices in the capital.

Commuter towns just outside London are benefiting from unaffordable house prices in the capital.

The National Housing Federation (NHF) says that rising prices in London mean that many young buyers cannot afford to buy in the city but this is have a positive impact on surrounding towns.

"There's no doubt that cities in the south east are seeing substantial growth, and we're particularly seeing the creation of new commuter areas outside London," said a spokesman for the NHF.

"Towns like Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead, Leighton Buzzard; these are all towns which have seen many more new homes and many more commuters arriving in them."

The spokesman went on to suggest that more homes need to be built in London in order to attract first-time buyers.

"While we definitely need more homes in and around these commuter towns, we also need to build many more homes of all types – not just one and two bed flats, but all sizes of home – actually within London itself," he added.
